The gentleman in the background picture is Carl Schurz, a "Forty-Eighter". After the failed revolution of 1848/49, he had to flee abroad. In England, he met married his wife Margarethe, they both immigrated to the USA in 1852. Carl Schurz became almost a friend to President Abraham Lincoln, and later Senator of Missouri and Secretary of the Interior in the Cabinet of President Hayes.
